NEW SHOES
[ Sung to something like ancient Anatolian music, played on something in the tanbur family.
Late one night my wife returned home
And my wife, she was without her shoes
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, where are your shoes?”
And my wife said to me
“I left them down at the river, husband”
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, why did you leave your shoes down by the river?”
And my wife said to me
“Husband, I found down by the river a chicken standing in the middle of the rushing waters”
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, how was a chicken standing in the middle of the river?”
And my wife explained to me
“This was no ordinary chicken, husband, this was a chicken the size of a man”
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, so why did you leave your shoes with this chicken the size of a man down in the river?”
And my wife explained to me
“Husband, that chicken, a chicken the size of a man, she had no shoes”
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, what will you do now that you yourself have no shoes?”
And my wife told me
“Of course you will buy me a new pair of shoes, husband”
And so I asked my wife
“Wife, how can I afford to buy you a new pair of shoes?”
And my wife explained to me
“Husband, why you might have to buy one less drink each night for you or your friends down at the drinking establishment”
And so I said to my wife
“Wife, of course”
And then my wife said to me
“You know that website that makes the only shoes that fit my feet, husband?”
And I said to my wife
“Maybe, wife”
And my wife said to me
“Husband, they have these very nice olive-green boots”
And so I said to my wife
“Nice, wife”
And then my wife explained to me
“So you can just electronic transfer me the money, husband”
And then I asked my wife
“Wife, about this chicken who is bigger than a man, should we be concerned?”
And my wife said to me
“Husband, it is a chicken it is not a rooster the size of a man”
And so I said to my wife
"But still it is a chicken, wife; a chicken the size of a man; a chicken the size of a man who stands in rivers; and not just any chicken the size of a man and who stands in rivers but one who now has a fine new pair of shoes"
